February 12, 2025, (Portland, OR)—The Children’s Literacy Project, a national organization that sparks community-led movements to tackle childhood illiteracy, has won a Gold Medal in the Inspiration category of the 2024 North American Book Awards for its groundbreaking title, READ: How God’s People Can Bring Justice Through Literacy (Aloha Publishing).
Written by Tony Kriz, theologian, international speaker, writer, and co-founder of Children’s Literacy Project, along with fellow co-founder Jeff Martin, READ shows how this crisis creates a pathway for 21st century faith communities to answer Jesus’ call to “love thy neighbor” and uplift the “least of these” by breaking generational cycles of injustice through literacy.
“We’re deeply honored to receive this recognition from the North American Book Awards,” said Kriz. “With one in three 4th-graders in the United States reading below basic level, the church has a crucial calling to support under-resourced children. By teaching them to read, we can help rescue an entire generation from poverty, prison, prostitution, addiction, and more.”
For over a decade, The Children’s Literacy Project has transformed communities by mobilizing individuals, organizations, and churches to serve in public schools. Their grassroots approach has ignited literacy movements in thousands of communities, with hundreds of thousands of volunteers stepping forward to mentor young readers in their neighborhood schools.
