ME IN MOTION “SANCTUS REAL SPRING TOUR” BLOG DAY 15:
The Good Shepherd
I’m listening to Sanctus Real sound check from the safety of the green room here in a suburb of Indianapolis. I think they’re playing a radiohead song… anyway there is a picture on the wall of Jesus. It’s a pretty classic picture of him depicted as a shepherd. He has a big staff and is carrying a little lamb. I’ve actually seen quite a few sheep on this tour out the window of our van. I started thinking today about all the Biblical references to sheep. I got curious and looked on the internet to see just how many times sheep are mentioned in the Bible. The answer: about 190. The funny thing is, sheep are known as some of the dumbest animals. The even funnier part, is that Jesus is usually comparing us to these mammals with low IQs! Out of all these references, this parable is my favorite:
Luke 15:4-7 – “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”
This story has always resonated with me. There is a song by Audio Adrenaline called “Leaving 99” that really drives this home. If you haven’t heard it, check it out. It’s such an amazing way of telling how important each one of us is to our Savior. He’s not the kind of God that loses you in the crowd. He’s not the kind of God who forgets about you. Even when your friends do, he’s still there. Maybe you feel left out at home, school, or at work. Don’t forget that He cares enough to leave the 99 and go searching just for you. He’ll keep searching until He finds you, and will bring you back with the flock.
