Some years ago, a dear friend and trusted spiritual mentor named Greg – who led a Bible study for us for many years – emailed me this Christian “Growth Chart” inspired by 1 Peter. I found it again in my emails recently and thought it was well worth sharing with all of you … especially in this crazy world we’re living in! — John D.
The Expected 3-Step Growth of a Christian from 1 Peter:
Based upon this statement – Chapter 1, verse 9: “You are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
- Chapter 1, verses 13 -17: Get Set
a) Prepare your minds for action (It is expected that change is coming as is growth)
b) Be self-controlled
c) Set yourself upon the grace to be given you when Christ is revealed (you are in God’s hand and He will not drop you—you’re in!—-period! Erase all doubt and fear and move on)
d) Do not conform to the evil desires you had (you are a new creature, born again — so act like it!)
e) Be holy (separate yourself from the pack and unto the things of God)
f) Live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear (this ain’t home and do not forget who your God is—“remove your shoes”) - Chapter 2, verse 2 : Grow
Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation (get a mind set that God’s Word is essential to your life as a believer) - Chapter 3, verse 15: Tell
a) But in your heart set apart Christ as Lord (Sell out—Romans 12:1) The source of your wisdom and strength to take the next step… (below)
b) Always be prepared to give an answer for the reason for your hope. (Allow the Lord to use you. Be ready. What is this all about? Have an answer—-it is expected that you will.)
c) Do it with gentleness and respect. We love first, we teach second.
